Following the Wye is an exploration of the landscapes, stories and folklore that have grown alongside the river.
From ancient stones and woodland paths to sacred wells, local legends and places where history and folklore have become tangled together, the Wye Valley holds stories waiting to be discovered.
LunaWye follows those threads with curiosity and respect, exploring what is documented, what belongs to folklore, and what the landscape might inspire today.
Some places will simply become stories.
Others may inspire new LunaWye rituals, handmade pieces or future gatherings, always making a clear distinction between old tradition and something newly created.
LunaWye is still becoming.
Right now, I'm creating handmade pieces, exploring the landscapes and folklore of the Wye Valley, learning the stories held here and discovering how they might weave into LunaWye.
There will be new creations.
There will be strange old stories and beautiful places. There is no set path. Just the river, the stories, and whatever we find along the way.⏾⋆.˚
There will probably be a few unexpected turns along the river. ༄
And one day, when the time is right, there will be movement, meditation and gatherings too.
Some places hold more than a view.
They hold stories.
Following the Wye is my journey through the landscapes, folklore and curious corners of the Wye Valley, from ancient stones and healing wells to woodland legends, forgotten traditions and stories carried along the river.
I’ll be visiting these places, uncovering what is known about them and sharing what I find along the way.
Some may inspire a handmade piece.
Some may inspire a ritual.
Some might simply be a story worth remembering.
No fixed destination. Just curiosity, connection and following where the Wye leads. ༄
Vaga, the Wanderer
Could the River Wye have its own spirit?
For centuries, writers and poets have personified the Wye as Vaga, the Wanderer, a female spirit flowing from the slopes of Plynlimon through the borderlands towards the sea.
Her origins are uncertain. Vaga may not be an ancient river goddess at all, but a name born from Latin, poetry and folklore that became entwined with the river over time. Yet by the late 18th century, she was already being imagined here in Ross-on-Wye as the Goddess of the Flood.
History, folklore or something somewhere between the two?
One Welsh tale -
Long before the Wye reaches Ross,
folklore gives the river a story of her own.
One Welsh tale tells of three river sisters born among the rain and mist of Plynlimon: Ystwyth, Hafren and Gwy.
Each chooses a different journey towards the sea.
Gwy chooses neither the quickest route nor the pursuit of knowledge. She chooses beauty, nature and the freedom to wander, travelling through valleys and forests and bringing tranquillity to the landscape around her.
Her journey becomes the River Wye.
Perhaps there is something to learn from Gwy.
Not every path needs to be the fastest. Sometimes the wandering is the journey.⏾⋆.˚
